Tuesday Book Review 6

When asked what inspired Amy Holder to write The Lipstick Laws, the young adult contemporary novel, she remarked, “My goal was to write a fun, humorous story about the ups and downs of social hierarchies in high school.  I also wanted to delve into social bullying and body image issues within the plot. Some drama, revenge and embarrassing moments were added, and April's story was the result.

The Lipstick Laws presents the high school crowd and Holder has presented almost a life like portrayal of the school arena. The milieu has the right touch of drama, revenge and life to it, creating a novel which can be enjoyed not only by the young adults but for people from all the ages. Amy Holder’s USP is her humor inscribed life like situations, which gives a particular edge to her stories. Started early, by grade three she had already finished the first chapter of her first book. Her first novel The Lipstick Laws weaves a different story than the regular chick lits and the protagonist is very much real.

Here is an excerpt from The Lipstick Laws:

At Penford High School, Britney Taylor is the queen bee. She dates whomever she likes, rules over her inner circle of friends like Genghis Khan, and can ruin anyone's life with a snap of perfectly manicured fingers. Just ask the unfortunate few who have crossed her.   For April Bowers, Britney is also the answer to her prayers. April is so unpopular; kids don't even know she exists. But one lunch spent at Britney's table, and April is basking in the glow of popularity. But Britney's friendship comes with a high price tag. How much is April willing to pay?
