Sunday Interview With Kimberly LaRocca

So it is my pleasure today to kick my mom -Luna- off the air and bring you a wonderful author who is here to celebrate her new book A Black Girl's Poetry for the World. Don't get discouraged though, you don't have to be black or a girl to enjoy these wonderful entries. So sit back and lets get started on "Ashley's Soul Train"

(I am awkwardly taking Luna's place, and always wanted to say Soul Train)

Why do you decide to get published?
I have quite a lot of poetry that I had lying around in journals and composition books. I thought it would be a great time to compile some of my work. It was very inspiring to create my blog and share my work with others and I think it gave me the push that I needed to publish my first collection.

What kind of book do you have there?
My first collection is contains poetry on love and life.

How long have you been writing?
I have been writing since elementary school. I have journals that are older than my children and somehow I managed to keep up with them throughout the years.

Do you have previous publishing experiences?
No, this is my first collection of poetry that has been published.

What is the reason you choose the host of your publishing?
I decided to self-publish my first collection in order to become familiar with the process. Traditional publishing houses require extended periods just to review an author’s work. There is also no guarantee that your work will be chosen. Going this route I also didn’t have to exclude poems which were posted on my blog. I could pick and choose what I wanted to appear in my book.

What is the cost of getting everything done?
The total cost was a little over $1000.00

Which part of the book you believe most charming to readers? please include 2 or 3 poems in your book.... for fiction, please pick out a paragraph to share.
Most of the feedback that I have gotten has been about my poems on love. We all go through ups and downs and most people tell me that they can relate to the ones in the book.

Love’s Surprise

Sometimes love throws you a curve.
It flows outside the lines.
Sometimes love takes broader shape,
Refuses to be confined.
It takes you up, then drops you down.
It smiles at you and then frowns.
Love pulls you in,
Pretends to stay, and
Evaporates to your dismay.
But love can also be so sweet,
Can pick you up and be complete.
It grows with you and holds you tight
And comforts you late at night
It finds you when you least expect,
And surprises you with no regrets.
It can start as just a fling
And then turn into everything.
So hold on tight,
Enjoy the ride,
And just await your love’s surprise.

The Man I Make for Me

Oh, how I wish
I could make
The perfect man for me!
We’d love and kiss each other often,
Live together happily.
He’d cherish the ground I walked on.
Put me before himself.
No one else would matter.
He wouldn’t see anyone else.
He’d love every part of me,
And even love my kids.
He’d cherish them because they were mine.
It wouldn’t matter if they were his.
He’d always take care of me.
I wouldn’t want for anything.
A perfect world
For him and me,
That man I made for me.

A Poet’s Song

I live in verse.
I think in rhyme,
Thinking, rhyming
All the time.
The sadness that you may see,
Is all poetry to me.
The happiness you’re feeling now
Turns into rhyme for me somehow.
I don’t know how
Or even why.
It sings to me from deep inside.
And it makes up
The best of me,
Living, breathing poetry

Do you have any hints on how to get published?
Since I’ve only self-published I would say that it may be easier than a traditional publishing house. I do think it is harder to market your book if you go this route.

Do you have a favorite author?
I actually have quite a few authors that I like. Alice Walker is one of my favorite poets and I love Steven King. I read quite a bit so I probably have a collection of about 400 books at home.

What are your major inspirations?
I write about personal experiences, things that I see, things that I read. I find inspiration everywhere. I can overhear a conversation and one or two words may stay with me. I never leave home without a pen.

What’s your writing plan for the future?
I am currently compiling my second collection of poetry, working on a series of short horror stories and working on a book about lessons that I’ve learned.
