Meet Our Writers Week 13: Rebecca, Virtual Book Tour Official

Today, Bluebell Books has a chance to interview one of our group members, Rebecca Camarena. Rebecca is a virtual book tour coordinator with Pump Up Your Book and is a freelance writer in sunny Southern California.

Welcome Rebecca,

Will you tell us about yourself?

Thanks for this interview. It's quite different to be the one being interviewed since I usually provide the interviews for authors on book tours. I am a virtual book tour coordinator with  Pump Up Your Book  and a freelance writer in Southern California. I have a background in Journalism and Literature.  My published articles cover a variety of topics from health, weddings, book reviews and animals.

Tell me about your blog(s), name(s), what does it mean to you?
I have multiple blogs, Paperback Writer where I interview authors. Writing Daze is more about the writing life and life as an adult college student. Dogs Rule Cats Drool is about two dogs who live outside in the yard and they try to get rid of the house cat. Hollywood Daze is about all things vintage and new Hollywood, Los Angeles and travel adventures in California.

 When did you start blogging?

I started blogging in 2007 when everyone in my writer’s group was creating blogs for their characters in the novels they had written. I wanted to be like everyone else, except I felt bad that I not been published and did not have any book characters to blog about. That was until I realized that I had two dogs and a cat that all had very distinctive personalities and thus, the blog, Dogs Rule and Cats Drool came to be. The blog is in the voice of each animal providing their unique perspective on life.

What is the theme(s) of your blog(s)? What do you write most? poetry, book review or cooking recopies  short stories?

My blogs themes include books reviews, author interviews, animal adventures, Hollywood and travel. I have written short stories, essays, journalism articles and academic papers.

What are the inspirations of your writing?

The inspirations for my writing come from my daily life as a blogger, writer, reader, wife, mother, adult college student and animal lover. I find lots of inspiration in reading.

Does music impact your writing?

Music does not really impact my writing. Usually, I prefer total silence to write at home or in the library.  My favorite place to write is in the car when we are driving and then the radio is on, the kids are chatting. My husband loves to drive and I write on the laptop while watching the road go by. I have written a lot of material driving along the California coastline and other places.

You are involved with Bluebell Books-The Book Review and Short Story Writing Challenge Blog, what is your role? what's the benefits of it?

At BlueBell Books, I blog about authors on book tours that I coordinate through Pump Up Your Book. The benefits of book tours are numerous to the authors. These posts help the authors reach out to audiences who will be interested in their books. The post stays in the archives of the blog and is available for anyone to read for the life of the blog.

Do you have a favorite book or author?

Trying to narrow the amount of favorite author to one is next to impossible. There are a lot of books that I like, but my favorite authors include John Steinbeck, William Faulkner, Ernest Hemingway, Edith Wharton, Willa Cather, Joan Didion and George Eliot.

Do you have a favorite quote?

“You are never too old to be who you might have been.” (George Eliot, author)

Any tips for those who might want to start blogging?

Having a blog can be very rewarding. Pick a topic that you like and then expand from there. Learn everything you can about blogging. Leave comments at other blogs to draw people to your blog. Bloggers are the nicest group of people that I have ever met. They can be your best friends and they really stick together.

What is your writing plan?

In 2012, I will graduate with a Bachelor’s degree in English Literature. I plan on expanding my freelancing and writing children's books.

Where can people find you?

I love that quote by Eliot you mentioned. How have I missed it over all these years - it's one we should all wake up with each morning.

What a neat surprise, Becky! I'm with you though, I have to have complete silence to work. I envy those who can do things with other things going on in the background but not me, my head can't take it. Very nice interview!

Great interview, Becky!
One of the questions was about music. I used to listen to country music when I wrote. Now for some reason I keep talk radio in the background, loud enough to hear what they're saying, yet not loud enough to drown out my thoughts.
